23 students from G D Goenka World Institute and two staff members, Dr Kim Menezes and Mr Anil Yadav, participated in the Summer School Program organised by Lancaster University from 20th July to 11th August 2013. Students from Lancaster University’s partner institutions in China, Malaysia, Pakistan and Palestine also participated in the program. It was great occasion for students to meet and develop friendship with students pursuing Lancaster University degree programs in several countries.
The Summer School Program had an academic and an experiential component. The academic component included inputs from different disciplines and setting into context globally significant issues such as poverty, climate change and corporate social responsibility. The students also had ample networking opportunities. This included a business networking dinner in London’s skyloft and the opportunity to connect with business leaders and some of Lancaster’s 100,000 alumni network. Community volunteering work included working with young people from disadvantaged areas and environmental change initiatives in the UK. Students also visited organic farms to get firsthand experience of alternative farming systems.
These activities helped develop greater appreciation on how to make a positive contribution to both global and local challenges.
The program also enabled students to experience Lancaster University’s beautiful campus, understand more about the University and the college system as well as participate in workshops and social and cultural activities. A sports day was also organised and this brought to fore the competitive spirit and hidden talent of the students from different countries.
Students also were able to do lot of sightseeing on weekends and visited Lancaster, Morecambe, Manchester, Blackpool, Conwy and Llaldudno in Wales, Edinburgh in Scotland, Windermere in the Lake District and a three day visit to London
The event concluded with a celebration event where certificates were awarded to the students by the Pro Vice Chancellor and later in the evening a gala dinner was also held.
It was a great learning experience for the students.
