Career overview

Professor Suku Bhaskaran joined G D Goenka World Institute-Lancaster University (GDGWI) in December 2011. He has more than 20 years experience in teaching, research and academic administration. He has served in senior full-time and visiting positions in several institutions world-wide including the following: Institute of Management Technology Ghaziabad (India); Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (India); Victoria University (Australia); Pennsylvania State University (USA); Melbourne University, Gilbert Chandler College (Australia); and Stamford College-Cyma College of Commerce (Malaysia). He has also lead-managed and completed several in-country training, research and consultancy projects in China, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Australia, USA and India.

Immediately prior to joining GDGWI he was a Senior Professor at the Institute of Management Technology Ghaziabad. He helped develop the new curriculum for the Institute’s Post Graduate Diploma in Management Program and oversaw its alliance in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor network.

Prior to this he was Professor (Strategy Area) and Chairperson (International Exchange) at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK). At IIMK he delivered courses in the Post Graduate Program in Management (Strategic Management; International Business); Fellowship Program in Management (Global Business; Small Business Management); Executive Post Graduate Program (Strategic Management; International Business I; International Business II); Management Development Program; and Faculty Development Program. He also supervised one Fellowship Program in Management student and two students completing projects/minor theses as part of the Executive Post Graduate Program. He played an important leadership role in IIMK’s successful application for accreditation by the Association of MBA (AMBA) in the United Kingdom.

Prior to joining IIMK in 2010, Professor Bhaskaran work abroad. His last position was with Victoria University in Australia where he was a tenured Associate Professor and the Director of the Australian Food Marketing Centre, a highly successful cross-disciplinary R&D activity. He established a substantive public profile through conceptualizing, tendering and successfully completing large numbers of research, training and consultancy projects funded through nationally and internationally competitive grants. He also taught at the post graduate and undergraduate levels and supervised several Masters by Research and PhD scholars.

Prior to joining academia, Professor Suku Bhaskaran held several leadership positions in large and mid-sized international companies. From 1991 to 1992 he was a Senior Partner at AMM Consulting, Melbourne, Australia. From 1987 to 1990 he was the Managing Partner of Savemart Supermarkets and SukuVis Pty Ltd. in Australia. He developed Savemart Supermarkets into a highly successful food trading (wholesale, retail, import-export) business. Concurrently, he was also a consultant to Pernas Edar Sdn Bhd. (PESB), a subsidiary of the large Malaysian conglomerate Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PERNAS).

From 1974 to 1986 he held several executive positions in PESB. He joined PESB as a graduate trainee and rapidly ascended to senior executive positions in marketing, planning and general management. His last position was “Planning and Marketing Manager”, a business development role. He identified several new ventures and lead-managed these into highly successful commercial operations. He established joint-venture companies, associate companies and product agency alliances with major international companies such as Booker McConnell Ltd. (United Kingdom), Danish Turnkey Dairies (Denmark), SHRM Marseillaise (France), Cofrapex Asia Pty Ltd (Singapore), N Corman and Sons (Belgium), Malaysia-Kuwaiti Investment (United Arab Emirates) and Nestle Catering Services (Singapore). In collaboration with consultants from Booker McConnell Ltd he facilitated the establishment of 36 multi-brand wholesale “Cash & Carry” depots and the development of about 20,000 food retail outlets that were associated to these “Cash & Carry” depots through a voluntary chain arrangement. This was a large and novel project involving a complex mix of stakeholders.
